Over 180 local residents, young and old, streamed into the Market Hall, Saxmundham on Saturday morning on February 23rd to register their thoughts and opinions on local facilities and amenities - and say what additional facilities and amenities they would like to see! The Saxmundham & District Community Interest Company held the drop-in morning with displays to explain the Community Plan consultation programme and the results so far. Everyone had the opportunity to drop in anytime during the four hours, have a tea or coffee, talk to the directors and volunteers and register their queries, comments and suggestions to help develop a vibrant and thriving local community. It seems like there was plenty to talk about!

It was noted that the equivalent enterprise in Wickham Market had so far raised over £1,000,000 to build a children's playground, a teenage skate park and a resource centre housing the library and assorted meeting rooms and offices.

(See what a successful Community Partnership has achieved)

The WICKHAM MARKET PARTNERSHIP

The Partnership was launched on 24th February 2003 as a Company Limited by Guarantee, with Charitable Status.  It developed out of the Market Towns Initiative (MTI), a Government scheme aimed at promoting the key role that market towns play in rural communities.  MTI funding lasted three years, from April 2001 to March 2004. The Partnership Steering Group completed a 'Healthcheck' involving Wickham Market and twenty three surrounding parishes in 2001.  The funding received contributed to three key projects: the environmental enhancement of the retail core of Wickham Market, the new Resource Centre and a community website.  Concurrently with this a skate park was developed and grant support given to a strong voluntary committee of local parents who developed a superb new play area.  Both these facilities are on the Village Hall playing field.   Since then the Wickham Market Partnership has successfully raised further funding to enable contributions to be made towards supporting a number of local organisations and projects.    In January 2006 the Partnership organised a community event in conjunction with the Wickham Market Community Primary School to update the earlier ‘Healthcheck’.  This led to a report ‘Taste of the Future’ published towards the end of the year, which has enabled the Partnership to build on what it has achieved so far.  It responded to the interest shown in tennis by entering the Big Lottery People’s Millions Competition in 2007, and as the runner-up with the most votes was awarded £94,000 to build three tennis courts in the village.   Building will be started early in 2008.  The Resource Centre is the base for the Partnership, offering an interview room, a meeting room and a consulting room.  Citizens Advice hold regular sessions in the interview room every Tuesday afternoon, and the meeting room is used by a wide variety of groups and organisations. The library has also been relocated here, offering more space, better access and improved internet connections.   The Partnership has a membership of 55 local businesses, organisations and individuals and to date has raised over £1,000,000 with successful grant bids.
